Can My Underground Plumbing Be Rerouted?
When homeowners find out they have a damaged sewer line, water line, or other underground utility, one of the first assumptions is often:
“I guess the new pipe has to go right back where the old one is.”
Not necessarily.
In many situations, an underground plumbing line can be rerouted, and sometimes changing the route is actually the better long-term solution.
Maybe the existing sewer line runs beneath a finished basement. Maybe your water service passes under a concrete driveway, retaining wall, mature landscaping, addition, patio, or another structure you would rather not disturb. Or perhaps the original route simply does not make as much sense today as it did when the property was built decades ago.
The important question isn’t simply whether a pipe can be rerouted.
It’s:
Does rerouting make more sense than repairing or replacing the existing route?
Let’s look at when rerouting is possible, why it may be recommended, what can prevent it, and how contractors determine the best path.
What Does It Mean to Reroute Underground Plumbing?
Rerouting means installing a new section of pipe along a different path rather than following the exact location of the existing underground line.
For example, imagine a sewer line currently travels from your house underneath a large concrete patio before reaching the public sewer connection.
If that pipe needs replacement, there may be several possibilities:
- Replace the pipe along its existing route.
- Use trenchless technology to minimize excavation along the existing route.
- Install a new sewer line around the patio and reconnect farther downstream.
Which option makes sense depends heavily on the property.
The same principle can apply to underground water services, sewer laterals, certain septic piping, and other underground utilities.
Why Would Someone Reroute an Underground Pipe?
There are several reasons rerouting may be worth considering.
1. The Existing Pipe Runs Under Something Expensive
Underground plumbing often predates what is currently sitting above it.
Over the years, homeowners may add:
- Driveways
- Patios
- Decks
- Garages
- Additions
- Retaining walls
- Pools
- Landscaping
- Walkways

Suddenly, replacing a relatively straightforward underground pipe becomes much more complicated because reaching it means disturbing everything above it.
If a practical alternate route exists, rerouting may reduce the amount of restoration required.
2. Access to the Existing Line Is Difficult
Sometimes the problem isn’t just what is above the pipe.
Terrain matters too.
Steep slopes, narrow access areas, retaining walls, neighboring property lines, mature trees, and other utilities can make excavation difficult.
An alternate route may provide contractors with better access and make future maintenance easier as well.
3. The Original Route Wasn’t Ideal
Homes aren’t always built with future underground plumbing repairs in mind.
We encounter situations where pipes take unusual routes, make unnecessary turns, pass beneath structures, or travel through areas that make future repairs unnecessarily difficult.
If the line already needs substantial replacement, it may be worth asking:
Do we really want to put the new pipe back in the same problematic location?
Sometimes the answer is no.
4. The Property Has Changed
A plumbing layout that worked perfectly well 40 years ago may no longer make sense.
Properties evolve.
Garages get built. Driveways expand. Basements are finished. Landscaping matures. Septic systems change. Municipal sewer becomes available.
Rerouting allows the plumbing layout to be reconsidered based on the property as it exists today, rather than automatically following decisions made decades ago.
Can a Sewer Line Be Rerouted?
Often, yes.
But sewer lines have one major requirement that makes rerouting more complicated than simply choosing the shortest path:
Gravity.
Most residential sewer laterals rely on gravity to carry wastewater from the house toward the septic system or municipal sewer.
That means a new route must maintain appropriate slope while also reaching the required connection point.
A route may look perfect from the surface but not work underground because the elevations don’t allow enough fall.
Other considerations can include:
- Depth of the existing sewer
- Location of the public sewer connection
- Septic tank location
- Required pipe slope
- Existing utilities
- Property boundaries
- Local requirements
- Buildings and permanent structures
- Trees and landscaping
- Excavation access
That is why determining whether a sewer can be rerouted usually requires more than simply looking around the yard.
Can a Water Line Be Rerouted?
Water services generally provide more flexibility because they operate under pressure rather than relying on gravity.
For example, if an old water service runs beneath a driveway, garage, or other difficult area, it may be possible to install a new service along another side of the property.
However, the contractor still needs to consider things such as:
- Meter or well location
- Where the line enters the house
- Required burial depth
- Existing underground utilities
- Distance
- Elevation
- Property boundaries
- Excavation access
- Pipe sizing and pressure requirements
A longer route may also require more pipe and excavation, so avoiding one obstacle doesn’t automatically mean the alternate route will cost less.
Can Septic Lines Be Rerouted?
Sometimes.
Septic piping can be more complicated because the entire system works together.
The location and elevation of the septic tank, distribution components, drainfield, house sewer, and surrounding terrain all matter.
You also don’t want to solve one problem by creating another.
For example, moving a pipe around an obstacle might sound simple until the new route interferes with another component of the septic system or no longer provides the necessary gravity flow.
Any proposed changes should be evaluated with the entire system in mind.
What Can Prevent a Pipe From Being Rerouted?
This is one of the most important things homeowners should understand:
Having open yard space does not automatically mean a pipe can go there.
There may be obstacles underground that you cannot see.
Those can include:
- Electrical service
- Gas lines
- Water lines
- Sewer lines
- Septic components
- Communications lines
- Drainage systems
- Wells
- Underground conduit
- Rock
- Foundations
- Retaining-wall footings
Elevation can also eliminate what initially appears to be an obvious sewer route.
Property lines and easements may restrict options as well.
This is why contractors should evaluate both what is visible and what is happening underground before recommending a new route.
Is Rerouting Cheaper Than Replacing the Existing Line?
Sometimes.
Sometimes not.
And this is where homeowners should be cautious about anyone giving an immediate answer without evaluating the property.
Imagine the existing sewer runs beneath 40 feet of decorative concrete.
Following the existing line may involve replacing and restoring that concrete.
A slightly longer route through an open yard could potentially make more sense.
But consider the opposite situation.
If rerouting requires 120 feet of new pipe, deeper excavation, multiple utility crossings, additional connections, and difficult terrain just to avoid 15 feet of driveway, following the original route may still be the better option.
The goal shouldn’t automatically be:
“Find the cheapest route.”
It should be:
“Find the solution that provides the best combination of cost, accessibility, reliability, property protection, and long-term performance.”
What About Trenchless Pipe Replacement?
Rerouting isn’t the only way to avoid major excavation.
Depending on the condition and layout of the existing pipe, trenchless pipe replacement may allow a contractor to replace the line while continuing to use approximately the same underground pathway.
Pipe bursting, for example, can replace certain existing underground pipes with new pipe while significantly reducing the amount of continuous trenching required.

That can be especially valuable when a sewer line passes beneath:
- Driveways
- Landscaping
- Sidewalks
- Patios
- Other finished areas
However, trenchless isn’t right for every property or every pipe.
In some cases, traditional excavation is better.
In others, rerouting is better.
And sometimes a project may even use a combination of trenchless and traditional methods.
A good underground plumbing contractor shouldn’t begin with a predetermined method. The property should determine the method.

How Do You Determine Whether Rerouting Makes Sense?
This is where a proper underground assessment becomes valuable.
Before recommending replacement or rerouting, we may need to determine:
- Where does the existing pipe actually run?
A camera and locating equipment can often help trace underground sewer lines and identify important locations.
- Where is the failure?
A localized problem and a deteriorated line running across the entire property are two very different situations.
- What is above the existing route?
Driveways, landscaping, buildings, retaining walls, and other improvements can significantly affect the decision.
- What else is underground?
Existing utilities can restrict possible routes.
- What are the elevations?
This is especially important for gravity sewer and septic piping.
- Where must the new line connect?
Moving the middle of the pipe doesn’t necessarily change where the system begins and ends.
- What will each option require?
A good contractor should be able to explain why one route or installation method makes more sense than another.

Should I Ask Contractors About Rerouting?
Absolutely.
Especially if your underground pipe passes beneath something you really don’t want disturbed.
A useful question to ask is:
“If you weren’t required to follow the existing pipe, is there another route you would consider?”
You can also ask:
- Could trenchless replacement avoid disturbing this area?
- What would rerouting change about the project?
- Are there elevation problems with another route?
- Would a new route make future repairs easier?
- What obstacles would the alternate route encounter?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?
If the contractor recommends one particular method, ask them why.
You should understand what you’re paying for and why it makes sense for your property.
Sometimes the Best Underground Plumbing Solution Isn’t the Most Obvious One
When an underground pipe fails, replacing it isn’t only a construction project.
It is also an opportunity to reconsider the layout.
If the existing route passes beneath a driveway, patio, addition, mature landscaping, or another difficult area, don’t automatically assume the replacement has to follow it.
